Visitors to Abuelo's will be pleasantly surprised at the atmosphere as the entrance opens to what is meant to be a courtyard beautifully anchored with
large columns and tasteful artwork. The ambiance can be comfortable but at times it may be rather loud. While the dining room does not have the feel nor
look of the other Mexican themed restaurants, it's menu reflects similiar differences. You will find traditional Mexican fare with a whole new selection of
offerings that cannot be found elsewhere in Knoxville. You can order anything from ala carte items to some of the largest combination platters offered at
any restaurant. It does appear that most menu items arrive very hot to your table, so you may be blowing on the first few bites. Chips and three versions
of salsa are served with every meal and on our visit, the bowls were quickly refreshed with a new supply of chips. The last two visits to the restaurant
showed a light lunch crowd with mediocre service. If you are here for the lunch hour, plan on being here longer. On one visit, we actually had to chase the
waitress around the restaurant to pay for our meal. Despite the mediocre service, we never suffered a shortage of chips and salsa or drinks. The food has
been consistently served quickly and is piping hot. Our worries lies with the management and wait staff--if customer service does not improve significantly
