     If there is one type of restaurant that Knoxville is short on, it's a good seafood restaurant.  With a name like Gunthor's (Goon-thor's) you're probably expecting an ornate atmosphere and a themed restaurant.  Upon you're entry you will discover the old interior to Ruby Tuesday's with few changes.  No tiffany lamps or anything, but the old RT Salad Bar still stands and the bar is quite drab without any colors.  The owner apparently wanted to go to no expense in operating the restaurant.  This is a start-up restaurant, home owned, so maybe as time goes by and with success, the restaurant interior will be updated to more reflect the name. 

     The Lunch Crew visited the restaurant a few days after opening and initially received prompt service.  Our waitress was very nice and quite eager to please, but sometimes she lost her way back to our table.  We were greeted with Gunthor's "Hush Muffins", a take on the original hush puppy.  The muffins were quite tasty with fresh ingredients, we wanted more!  Our waitress obliged but opted to let us try the potato bread.  This bread was fresh and filled with dill seed and served with butter.  I must say, I couldnt taste the bread, nor the dill, apparently the flavor was left in the kitchen.  The potato bread was very nice looking but it had no flavor what-so-ever.  Bummer!

     Finally our meals arrived.  Served on modern square platters and nicely decorated.  Among the items we ordered were Erik's Crabcakes and Super Grouper.  The Super Grouper was quite tasty and to put it mildly, was great.  The 5 oz. serving left something to be desired!  Erik's crabcakes had plenty of crab meat and was very tasty.  Among the sides were the Red Skin Mashers, Joy's Ol' Timey Slaw and My (Spinach) Maria.  The mashers were very acceptable and pretty much what you expect.  The slaw was on the bitter side and could use some re-tooling.  My Spinach Maria is among the best recipes we have ever tasted.  Maria starts off slow and adds a sneaky bit of heat to the palate.

     Overall the food is good and will be the key in keeping this restaurant going.  Being a home town built restaurant, the decor may come along as success drives the restaurant.  If the service isn't good, this restaurant will see hard times.  Gunthor's is worth a visit but give it some space!
